Housewarming gift ideas for a small apartment

Choose something the new household can eat, use, or fit into the space without asking them to find more storage.

For a small apartment, choose a housewarming gift that gets used up, fits an existing routine, or takes up almost no room. If the hosts asked you to bring nothing, show up as invited and leave the gift at home.

Start with something that gets used up

Coffee from a local roaster, their favorite olive oil, or a loaf from the bakery near their new place can be easy to enjoy. Check dietary needs and avoid anything that needs fridge space on a busy moving day. You can also offer to bring breakfast once they've unpacked.

Buy for the home they have

A set of compact dish towels is easier to fit than countertop equipment. For a planter or storage box, ask about the space and measure before buying. If they already have the item, offer a replacement only if they say they want one.

Choose a useful local introduction

If they're new to the area, give them a small voucher to a café they can walk to and write down what you order there. Check whether it expires and whether they need to spend extra to use it. A printed list of favorite neighborhood stops costs nothing and can be just as welcome.

Skip gifts that create a job

Wall art needs hanging, some plants need particular light, and appliances need a place to live. Ask before giving anything that involves upkeep or a change to the room. If you do buy a household item, include a gift receipt if available.
